Getting Real about Junk Food

The New York Times article “The Extraordinary Science of Addictive Junk Food” is quite interesting and in general makes me angry. This article discusses the fact that the giant “food” corporations know that they are producing unhealthy crap and that it is addictive. They have worked out the perfect ratios of salt, fat, and sugar to make the “food” the most appealing and also the most addictive. They have marketing campaigns to get people to buy the crap. A lot of this marketing is directed at children.

Our country is creating bad eating habits and very deranged metabolisms in our children at a very young age. I grew up with junk food in the house but it was a treat. I was not allowed to have soda because I was very sensitive to caffeine and still am. We had a garden and you ate what grew in the garden in the summer. We did not eat fast food. If we went out to eat it was at a decent restaurant. I played outside and did not watch much TV. We only had 2 TV channels until I was in junior high. I did not have a computer or internet at home until I was in high school. I am truly amazed at people these days. I will get off my soap box now.
